EPISODE 17
“Hello Kike”
“Femi, you have to come home now, something terrible
happened” Kike said with a heart-rending sob.
“It’s okay baby, don’t cry, just calm down and tell me what
happened”
“Femi, our baby is gone,” she said and burst into fresh tears.
“What are you talking about Kike, which Baby?” I asked in shock and before she could answer someone took the phone from her.
Hello Sir, can you come to Victory Hospital at Abule Egba
now? Your wife is here with us” she said calmly.
“What are you talking about? What is my wife doing in a
hospital” I shouted. I quickly dropped the phone and started packing my
belongings; I had this feeling deep down in my heart that something bad has
happened to Kike.
I rushed downstairs and Mr. Chris the supervisor met me at the
staircase.
“Take care of this place, I have an emergency,” I said quickly
and rushed to the car. I could see other staff staring at me as I opened the
car and drove away; they had never seen me leaving my office that early before.
I didn’t know how I got to the hospital, I drove like a mad
man that day as a thousand and one thought crossed my heart and none of them
was pleasant.
“Excuse me, my name is Mr. Femi, someone called me that my
wife is here,” I said to the Nurse at the reception. I was sweating profusely
despite the fact that I just got down from a car with full AC.
“Her name please”
“Her name is Kike, she is dark in complexion and of average
height”
“Oh! You are the husband of the woman that had a miscarriage?”
the nurse asked looking surprised.
“Maybe you don’t know who I am talking about, my wife is not
pregnant..” I was trying to explain when another nurse walked into the
reception area.
“You are Mr. Femi?”
“Yes”
“I was the one that spoke with you some hours ago, your wife
is in the doctor’s office,” she said calmly. I looked at her in apprehension and
wondered how she can be calm as if my Kike wasn’t crying like a baby a few hours
ago.
She asked me to follow her and I did, she knocked at the
doctor’s office and entered. I saw Kike in front of the doctor with her hand on
his table”
“Kike!” Immediately she saw me she burst into fresh tears,
her eyes were swollen and bloodshot.
The doctor beckoned on me to sit beside her and I did, she
clung to me and continued weeping.
“What happened Doctor?”
“Your wife just had a miscarriage,” he said staring at me
calmly.
“I am not aware that she is pregnant,” I said looking
surprised.
“Well, she was rushed here by a staff of AB Microfinance.
Apparently, she went there to collect the loan she applied for and the process
was strenuous, she already lost the baby before they brought her”
“My God! Kike you didn’t tell me anything” I said as I turned
to her.
“This is not the time to question her, we wanted to give her
sedative but she kept saying she didn’t want to miss work tomorrow. Take your
wife home and take care of her” the doctor said.
“Are we owing your hospital?”
“Yes, we gave her treatment when she came here, you can pick
up your bill at the reception area”
I didn’t say another word to Kike until several hours later
when she had taken the tea and bread I prepared and had taken her bath.
“You never told me you were pregnant”
“I am sorry Femi. I wanted it to be a surprise, I didn’t know
we are going to lose the baby” she said tearfully.
“Don’t worry, we can have another baby” I said wiping her
tears. I allowed her to sleep and went into the sitting room to rest.
Myriads of thoughts went through my mind as I deliberated on
what happened. “I have really wronged
Kike, if she knew what happened with the money she will never forgive me. She had to lose our baby after all the pains
she went through to get pregnant after 8 years”
A message dropped on my phone and I quickly checked and it
was from Cynthia. “We have to do something about this pregnancy before it is
too late to abort it” the message read.
“What do I do about Cynthia?
I am really in a big mess. She will have to abort the child, I can't do this to
Kike” My phone rang
breaking my thoughts, I thought it was from Cynthia but it turned out to be my
mother.
I contemplated on not picking the call but I decided to pick
when it rang the second time.
“Hello Femi”
“Hello Mama, good evening”
“Good evening, I asked you to see me yesterday”
“Mama, I can't come because of the nature of my job”
“What about this weekend? Should I be expecting you?”
“I am busy this weekend, maybe next week,” I said impatiently.
“So I cannot see my own son again? Your wife asked you not to
come and see me again”
“Leave Kike out of this mother! Have you not tortured her
enough?”
“You are talking to me like that Femi? You have forgotten
that you sucked my two breasts? I warned you not to marry an Ijebu girl but you
refused to listen, see what she has turned your life to”
“Mama if you have nothing else to say I want to hang up the
call now” I said angrily.
“Femi? You want to hang up the call on me? You are a bastard!
That girl has bewitched you abi? No wonder prophets keep telling me she is
using your glory. They said you can't prosper if you are with her, she has eaten
her womb…”
I didn’t allow mama to finish her words before ending the call;
I was boiling with anger as I dropped the call. A call came in from my sister
immediately.
“Hello Banke”
“Hello Brother mi”
“What happened?” I shouted angrily. I knew I shouldn’t transfer
aggression on her but I was too tired to care.
“Maami said you and your wife disrespected her”
“She should leave Kike out of this” I shouted
“You shouldn’t have replied her, you just made a grave mistake”
