I HAVE DRUNK STRANGE WATERS - Episode 35

 

EPISODE 35

“Whatever happened, wait for me to arrive with her father tomorrow. Tell your mother I said I will make sure I imprison anyone that dare lay hands on my daughter” she said and disconnected the call.

“What did that crazy woman tell you?” Mama shouted.

I looked at Mama for a while as I gauged how much to tell her “She said she is coming with her father tomorrow morning” I replied.

“No ooo! She is leaving the house today!!!”

“Mama, let’s not look for trouble. Her cousin is a soldier and I don’t want trouble for you, let’s wait till tomorrow”

“You, I am not done with you,” Mama said pointing at Kike “I am coming back tomorrow morning to deal with you and your witch of a mother,” Mama said as she tied her gele and stormed out of the house angrily.

I stared at Kike as she sat on the floor weeping and I didn’t feel an ounce of pity for her “I can’t stay in the house with you, I will be back tomorrow morning. Call me when your parent arrive”

She raised her hands towards me and I flinched. It was as if I was about to be touched with feces.

“I am sorry Femi. You shouldn’t have involved my mother, I will accept any punishment you decide to give me” she said looking down in shame.

I walked out of the house and sat down in my car outside the gate, when I checked the time it was about 7:00 PM. I picked up my phone slowly and called Cynthia.

“Hello”

“Hi Femi, where are you? You didn’t come back to the office”

“Can you meet me at the apartment the company gave me? Get the key from the gateman if you get there before me” I disconnected the call and headed to the apartment.

It was late in the night around 9:00 PM by the time I horned at the gate when I parked my car and entered. I was perceiving the aroma of delicious food.

Cynthia was in the sitting room waiting for me, she hugged me immediately after I entered. “What happened?” she said in alarm.

“You cooked something?”

“Yes, go and shower and I will get your food ready”

By the time I showered and ate with Cynthia, it was late in the night.

“You didn’t tell me what happened,” Cynthia said slowly.

“She charmed me, our marriage has been a lie,” I said slowly.

“I told you. I knew she was up to no good the moment I set my eyes on her. What will happen now?”

“You can have this apartment; it will be our home until we find a better place after the wedding. I can’t even bear to see her now” I said dejectedly.

For the first time since I walked through the door, I allowed all the hurt and disappointment I was feeling to show on my face “How can Kike do this to me? I loved her”

“It is fine Femi, I am here for you,” Cynthia said as she gathered me into her arms like a baby.

The night felt like a long one because I couldn’t sleep; I stayed awake long after Cynthia had gone to bed. As I stared at her sleeping form beside me I thought about Kike. “Why Kike? Why did you have to do this? I felt guilty about betraying you, but I just feel lucky to have Cynthia now”

I went to the office that morning but I couldn’t concentrate at work. When Kike called me around 10:00 AM I asked Cynthia to cover up for me and I headed home.

When I entered the sitting room Kike’s parents were already seated. Kike was sitting alone on a chair staring into pace, she was still wearing the clothes she wore the previous day.

“Good morning,” I said as I prostrated before them.

“Good morning Femi, stand up and have your seat” it was Kike’s mother replied to me.

“Where is your mother?” Kike’s father said angrily.

“Baba Kike! I thought we agreed to handle this gently” Kike’s mother said pleadingly.

“My mother is not coming; I think we should resolve this without her. Mama is too emotional and I don’t want her to get in the way of settling this matter peacefully” I said calmly.

“God bless you, my son,” Kike’s mother said in gratitude.

I sat on another chair facing them, and all of us stared at one another for some minutes.

“Femi, I want to plead with you as a man to another man. I know Kike has offended you greatly, but I want you to forgive her” Kike’s father said calmly.

“Did she tell you where she got the charm from?”

“No, she said whoever gave it to her threatened her that something terrible will happen to her if she tells anyone” Kike’s mother replied.

“With all due respect ma, your daughter is a liar. Did she show you the calabash and the charm? There is another man’s name there. I think Kike is having an affair”

“No, it’s not what you think…” Kike cuts in.

“I am disappointed in you Kike. With all the training I and your father gave you, is this how you want to repay us? I told you to stop running around, didn’t I? You said you wanted your husband to make it in life by force see where you ended everything” Kike’s mother replied her.

“Femi, Kike is my daughter and I know her very well. She has never followed any man since she met you, how can she turn into a prostitute overnight? Whatever you saw, I believe there is an explanation to it” Kike’s father cuts in.

“I want to believe her too. I thought I knew my wife, I couldn’t imagine in my wildest dream that she can do this. I am giving her the last chance, it is either she explains what the charm is for and who Eric is or she packs out of my house” I said calmly.

Kike went on her knees immediately and tears rolled out of her eyes “Maami, help me beg him, I did it out of ignorance”

“Shut up your mouth! See the kind of disgrace you have brought to our family. I will walk out of this house if you refuse to explain what the charm was all about!” Kike’s father shouted at her angrily.

“Kike, can’t you just tell the three of us here where you got the charm from? We won’t tell anybody. Your husband already promised to forgive you; don’t be afraid” Kike’s mother said patting her back gently.

Kike shook her head sadly “Mama, you won’t understand, the fact that he saw it alone is dangerous. I have been told the implication is irreversible”

“Kike! Why are you behaving like this? Aren’t you the one that asked us to help you beg your husband? We trained you the Christian way, you shouldn’t be afraid of any charm” Kike’s mother said pleadingly.

Kike’s father stood up angrily “Solape! Meet me at home when you are ready. I am done here; let your daughter call us when she is ready to talk” Kike’s father said and walked out angrily.

Kike suddenly started sobbing loudly “Maami, are you going to leave me too? Help me beg him”

Kike’s mother turned to me slowly “Femi, is there anything we can do concerning this matter”
