“You mean Cynthia?” I asked in shock.
“Yes, I think that’s her name”
I couldn’t feel my head for several minutes as I digested what Kike just told me “Femi, you are finished”
“Cynthia is Loveth’s cousin?” I asked when I found my voice.
“Yes, you know her?”
“Yes, of course, she is one of our staff,” I said quickly. I drank water and waved to signal to her that I am done eating.
I couldn’t sleep that night as I tossed and turn on the bed beside Kike, I couldn’t wait for 5:00AM before I got out of bed and started preparing for work. I waited for Cynthia to arrive several hours later.
“Why did you keep calling me?” Cynthia said as she entered my office.
“Is it true that Loveth is your cousin?” I asked without offering greetings.
“You know Auntie Loveth?” she asked looking surprised.
“Answer my question,” I said looking impatient.
“Yes, she is my favorite cousin; her father is my mom’s brother”
I sat down slowly and grabbed my head with my two hands “Why do you have to be her cousin?”
“Do you know her? She didn’t come to my introduction because she is out of the country, she will certainly come for my wedding. What is happening here?”
“Your cousin Loveth is Kike’s best friend,” I said with a long look.
“My God!” Cynthia said and sat down on the chair opposite mine.
“Everything is over, I am finished,” I said moved to tears.
Cynthia suddenly became angry and stood up “Do you fear her that much?”
“She is my wife!”
“What about me? Answer me?”
“You are my wife too but not like Kike, she must not find out”
“What if she did? Then what? Will she kill you? Why are you behaving like a woman?” she was getting angrier each passing minute and it wasn’t helping my mood one bit.
“We have to cancel the traditional marriage or just postpone it for now”
“Are you crazy? Is that the only solution you can think about?”
“Do you even imagine what will happen if your cousin knows I am your husband to be? She has a role to play in me getting this job and that is because of her relationship with Kike” I said getting worked up.
“Do you think she is going to stand by your Kike at the expense of her favorite cousin? Forget it! Just handle your wife and I will find a way to stop her from attending our traditional wedding”
“Can you do that?” I said staring at her with gratitude in my eyes.
“Yes! You are becoming more annoying every day Femi, I am only going to take this until our traditional wedding is done and dusted. I am coming for that your witch wife” Cynthia said and walked out.
I felt as if a mountain has been lifted from my shoulder, I suddenly remembered I have an appointment with the accountant by 10:00AM that morning. I quickly decided to call Mama before the meeting.
“Hello Mama”
“Hello Femi, how are you doing my son? I was just about to call you now”
“Mama, about what you said yesterday…”
“Femi, you don’t have anything to worry about. By the time I finish talking to her, she will even follow us to…”
“Mama stop! I don’t want you to tell Kike anything, I will tell her when I am ready. Telling her will spoil everything”
I spoke with Mama hurriedly and disconnected the call a few minutes to 10:00AM. A call came in as I was rearranging my table.
“Hello, Femi speaking”
“This is Moyo Motors Sir, the car you requested is ready Mr. Femi. We will send someone to deliver it tomorrow morning, can you send your office address please?”
I quickly called out my address, I wasn’t happy with the company because I was charged twice the amount I planned to spend and I had to be placed on installment payment when I couldn’t afford the whole money.
The accountant walked in a few minutes later looking professional in his expensive suit, I even wondered if he had not been embezzling money behind my back before we struck a deal.
“Good morning Sir,” He said with a smile as he sat on the chair Cynthia vacated.
“Good morning, how is family, Mr. Yinka?”
“Family is fine Sir, I understand you want to discuss something important with me”
“Of course, I want to thank you for bailing me out of the difficult situation last week”
“You are always welcome Sir; I was surprised you didn’t even ask before then. For a while I thought you are those too religious bosses that think taking money somebody was too dumb to offer you is a sin” He said grinning.
“I don’t know you are the master of the game either” I responded trying to cover up the fact that my hand was shaking.
“I will take that as a compliment”
“Please do. I called for you because I have a heavier deal” I said in a low tone, I couldn’t stand the thought of people listening to our conversation
“How much do you want this time around ?”
“Not much, I want about 10 million for my traditional wedding”
“And you are ready to do anything I asked you?”
“Yes,” I said looking desperate.
“Even if it means putting the future of your wife at risk?”
