EPISODE 23
“It is a promotion letter; you are our new supervisor”
“Really?”
“Yes, congratulations”
I expected her to shout with joy, she scanned through the
letter and folded it back.
“Thanks,” she said and was about to stand up.
“You are not surprised?”
“Of course I am! I don’t want to rejoice in front of my
enemy, I know you are not happy I got the position” she said sassily.
“Of course I am, I think we should celebrate this,” I said
smiling.
“Sure, I will celebrate this, but not with you. If you have
nothing else to say, can I take my leave?”
“No, don’t leave. I have something important to discuss with
you” I said clearing my throat.
“Well, make it snappy. I am busy you know” she was looking at
me with hate in her eyes.
“Cynthia I know I have offended you in the past, can we just
forget about what happened and move on?” I said calmly.
“So you have become a motivational speaker? You want me to
probably forget about the pregnancy too abi?”
“Cynthia about that…”
“See, I already know what you want. I don’t want this baby
either, just give me the money and I will get rid of it. We can then forget we
have ever met” she said angrily and was about to stand from her chair.
“That’s not what I want” I blurted out.
“What? Did you drink something Femi? Are you not the one that
asked me to remove this thing yesterday? See me see trouble o!” she laughed in
scorn.
“Well, I changed my mind. Can you keep it, please? For now, let’s
just leave it, when you have the baby…”
“Which baby? Are you crazy? I am not going to have this baby
because I am going to abort it. Are you saying this because you don’t want to
give me the money I requested for?”
“Forget about the money Cynthia, this is a serious matter. A
prophet visited my mother, he said you will die if you attempt to abort the
baby”
“Which baby?” Cynthia asked and went back to her seat. “Are
you serious about this?”
“Do you think I want the baby too? Do you think I want to
betray my wife? We have to do something about this” I said pleadingly.
“The moment I set my eyes on you I knew you were trouble. You
have put me in a deep mess” Cynthia said as she grabbed her head with her two
hands.
“What are you talking about? Don’t you want to have the
baby?” I asked looking surprised.
“It’s not as if I don’t want to have this child, it’s just
that I can’t. There has to be another way Femi” Cynthia said looking sober.
“She did not want to
have the child? Is it that she cannot have a child or what?” I thought as I stared at her with a
puzzled expression.
“You can’t have a child?” I asked looking surprised.
“No, I can’t have your child. There is a difference between
the two” she said staring at me as if I have lost my mind.
“Is it because I said I hate you? That is not entirely true,
I think we can work things out…”
“See Femi, this is not about what you feel or what I feel.
The point here is that I can’t have a child out of wedlock. It is a taboo in
our family, my father will kill me if he ever hears of it” Cynthia said looking
angry.
“You can’t have a child out of wedlock? Is that a tradition
or something?”
“I am tired of all these games; I will just go ahead and
abort this baby. I don’t believe what that stupid prophet said; I am going to
do it at a standard hospital.
“Have you ever wondered how he knew you are pregnant? I am
too scared to even think right now”
“Well, I am not scared. Just get ready the money and leave
the rest to me” She said and was about to stand again.
“Don’t leave yet, please. What do you think we can do for you
to keep this baby?” I asked looking desperate.
“It is very simple, you have to marry me. You have to come to
our town for a traditional rite and pay my bride price”
“What! What kind of stupid custom is that?” I asked looking
stunned.
“How am I supposed to know? I didn’t make the custom. You
don’t have to marry me, just trust me and let me get rid of the baby”
“What if something happens? What if you die? Then what?” I asked slowly.
“Then you go to jail, you will have to sign a consent form
before the doctor can carry out the evacuation,” Cynthia said staring at me, her
look was so fearless I was almost convinced she was not afraid of dying.
“Even if I go to jail you will still be dead,” I said staring
at her.
She suddenly becomes afraid for the first time, it looked as
if her courage suddenly disappeared.
“What are we going to do now?” she whispered slowly.
“Get married”
