I HAVE DRUNK STRANGE WATERS - EPISODE 42

 EPISODE 42

“They we..nt away with the Enga..gement It….ems”

Before I could control myself I landed a hot slap on her cheek.

“Are your village people mad? Tell me!” I was going crazy and I didn’t care at that point.

She burst into tears and Mama pushed the door open and rushed to embrace her.

“What happened my wife?” she said in concern.

“What are you doing here Mama? Who called you?” I shouted in anger.

“Your wife asked me to meet her in your room before coming as if the poor girl knew you would batter her. Have you gone crazy Femi?” Mama shouted as she looked at me accusingly.

“Yes, I’m crazy Mama! Ask Cynthia what happened” I shouted back. I knew my eyes would be budging like that of a crazy man by now and probably scaring everyone out of their mind but I was far from being concerned.

“Iyawo, talk now!” Mama said facing Cynthia.

“I was only explaining to him that according to our tradition, we can only hold engagement on Fridays because we have to throw a big party on Saturday. Our village elders came this morning and demanded that we do the engagement according to tradition, I was trying  Femi’s number but it wasn’t reachable…”

“What kind of crazy tradition is that? You will hold a wedding without the Bridegroom?” I screamed again.

“We used your framed picture, I tried to stop them…”

“If you think I’m going to accept that then you have all gone crazy! After all the millions I spent on those items you didn’t even allow me to set my eyes on them,” I started pacing the room angrily, I looked at Mama’s eyes and I saw that she was trying not to cry.

“This is shame o! My enemies are at it again. If you had told us we would have arrived yesterday, how will I tell our relative that there is no wedding again? Ha!!! Let the ground open and swallow me o!” Mama screamed. She already took off her headgear and was sitting on the floor.

”I’m so…rry. My father said we can still hold the party tomorrow as planned just that there would be no engagement since the elders already took away the traditional items we bought” Cynthia said wringing her hands.

“Tell those elders to bring back those items or else I will set your village on fire! Return all my millions! I am no longer interested in this marriage” I shouted.

“Ye Moku o! Femi has killed me. I know Kike will follow us here, that girl’s witchcraft is too strong, now she has ruined the day of my joy” Mama cried again.

“Leave Kike out of this Mama! You pushed me into this remember? See what you have caused? See how these people have scammed us”

“How dare you Femi? How dare you insult my people?” Cynthia stood up and shouted. She faced me squarely and the look in her eyes was fearless.

“So I insulted your stupid elders, what will you do?” I shouted.

“Thunder fire your village!” Cynthia shouted and I rushed at her to give her the beating of her life when I suddenly heard a knock on the door.

“Who is there? Who is that crazy person knocking?” Mama shouted.

“I am the one o! It is Iya Tawa, I want to tell you we have not been served dinner and we are all hungry. I have been looking for you…”

“It is that hunger that will kill you!” Mama shouted as she opened the door to face Iya Tawa.

“What is happening here? I was hearing noise from miles away, that’s how I knew which room you entered” Iya Tawa said looking concerned.

“Did we invite you into our matter? Sebi it is the caterer that said two cows will not be enough and we are trying to settle it, please go away before I unleash the anger burning inside me on you” Mama said and Iya Tawa walked away hurriedly.

We all became calm suddenly and sat down without talking to each other, after some minutes Mama spoke up.

“I think the best thing to do is to pretend as if nothing happened, at least we can still have the party tomorrow. If we cancel everything I will die of shame; may our enemies not rejoice over us”

I saw sense in what she said but I wasn’t ready to forgive Cynthia and her village people.

Mama quickly adjusted her clothes and walked out of the room leaving the two of us to settle the matter among ourselves.

“I’m sorry Femi, I couldn’t stop them. I wish there was something I could do to delay the engagement till you arrive” Cynthia said apologetically. She is looking morose once again.

“The deed is done already, please leave me, I want to be alone”

Cynthia walked out of my room without uttering another word and I locked the door, I sat on the bed and supported my head with my two hands. I knew canceling the whole wedding was out of it because I don’t want a few of our relatives and Mama’s friends that came to carry the news back to Lagos, I just have to find a way to save face tomorrow.

My phone rang and I picked it up to check the caller, when I discovered that it was Kike I waited for the phone to stop ringing and turned it off immediately. Kike is the last person I wanted to speak with at that moment, something tells me she has a hand in what is happening.
