"Femi! Femi! Femi! Open this door"
"Mama!" I shouted in alarm and got out of bed.
I quickly scrambled to open the door and stared at her worried face "What happened Maami? Why are you shouting like that?"
"Our bus is about to take off, I was expecting your call this morning and I have been trying to reach you"
"My phone is here, it has been on all this time," I said and looked at the face of my phone, I suddenly discovered my phone is in flight mode.
Why is my phone in flight mode? Did I put it on flight mode myself last night before sleeping? If I didn't do it then who could have been the culprit?
"Cynthia! Have you seen Cynthia Mama?" I said in alarm.
"Of course, she came to my room at dawn to help me pack"
"She helped you pack? Is she not going with us? We are supposed to go together this morning."
"You can ask her, our driver is getting impatient please try to hurry up," she said and went back to her room.
My head felt foggy and I couldn't remember what took place in the night, I knew I couldn't find Cynthia the first time I woke up so she must have left my side a long time ago. "Where did she sleep? Where was Cynthia throughout the night?"
I had a quick bath and changed into fresh clothes, I was done in about 15 minutes. I was arranging my things when I heard a soft knock, I left the door open after Mama came in so she made her way into the room without any hassle.
"Good morning husband," She said giving me a brief hug.
"Where have you been? You practically vanished overnight" I said looking at her accusingly.
"I'm sorry Baby, you reek of alcohol and I couldn't handle the smell. I had to go sleep in Benita's room"
"You should have warned me when I was binging on your local wine" I was looking sober now.
"And spoil the merriment? I'm not the type of woman that cages a man. I don't want to watch over you like a mother hen, you already have one woman doing that. Lest I forget, what are we going to do about Kike? I intend to enjoy my husband to the fullest once I get to Lagos"
"Kike won't be a problem anymore, I'll be moving to our new home immediately after I get to Lagos. There is little she can do now that we are married" I said offhandedly.
"What if she comes over to disturb us, Baby? I don't want any trouble"
"Nobody is going to give you any trouble, the house and all other documents are in your name. You are free to mark your territory if she makes any move, let her remain in her one room and parlor if she wishes. I'm done with her, she's free to move on with her life" I finished zipping my bag and picked up my wristwatch from the table.
"Awnnn! I love you so much my Baby" She said and rushed into my arms.
"You know I am crazy about you. Why are you not coming to Lagos with us today?"
"I got some gifts on Friday, they are so many that they won't fit into your car. Benita's Fiancee came for the wedding, he came with a jeep. We'll return to Lagos in his car" she said and held me tightly.
"That's fine," I said and picked up my bag.
I headed out to the reception to check out, Mama and others were already inside the bus and ready to leave. I finished checking out and signaled to their driver to lead the way.
The journey was smooth and hitch-free because we didn't experience any traffic congestion on the way, Cynthia kept calling to ask about our whereabouts. When she called for the 4th time in less than two hours I became amused. I was enjoying our chit chat but I was curious.
"Hello husband, where are you now?" She said for the fourth time.
"Hi Babe, we are outside Calabar now, I can see an intersection ahead"
"That's fine, I'm glad you are making progress, keep me posted"
"Yes ma, you are beginning to turn into a mother hen you know?" I said jokingly.
"Nah! I'm too hot and sexy to be a mother hen, I'm still a chick" she replied laughing.
I looked ahead and noticed that Mama's bus stopped moving.
"Can I call you back Babe? I think there is an issue with Mama's bus" I said and quickly disconnected the call before she could give a reply.
I took note of our surroundings and discovered that we have left all major towns behind, we are on an untiled and deserted road, and only a few cars are passing the route.
I checked the time and it was almost 9:00 AM, I couldn't tell if their vehicle developed a fault or if they stopped temporarily so that the women can ease themselves.
I was a few kilometers away from where they stopped, I moved a little bit closer and brought out my phone to call Mama.
I suddenly heard a scream and looked up, I watched in horror as about six hefty men came out of the bush with big and ugly guns.
"Everyone come out of the bus and raise your hands above your heads! Any funny move and you are all dead!"
