I HAVE DRUNK STRANGE WATERS - Episode 14

 EPISODE 14

“Find a way. Please, let this be the last time you will come near me, I am going to forget whatever happened here ever happened” I said and kept walking.

“We are not done Femi; there are some things you can never forget. You will be back” I heard her say as I walked out of the door.

I drove towards home with a heavy heart that morning; I placed a call to the supervisor and told him I will be coming to work late. “How do I explain to Kike that I only have a hundred thousand out of three hundred and fifty thousand”

I contemplated telling her what happened but I Kike will react badly, I tried putting myself into her shoes and realized I had fumbled terribly. “I am sorry I have to lie to you Kike, but I promise this is the last time I will ever do that”

I knocked at the door and the door flew open immediately, she has been waiting.

“Femi” she said and fell into my arms.

“Kike, I am so sorry”

“What happened last night, you sound strange on the phone”

“Something terrible happened Kike, you won’t believe it” I sat and sat down on the chair soberly.

“What happened? Did you get robbed?”

“No, it was worse. I was on my way to the apartment when I was arrested by SARS”

“My God! Did they do anything to you?” Kike shouted.

“It was worse, they stopped all the cars passing that route and arrested all of us. They said they tracked the stolen car to that area” I said tiredly.

“Those people are wicked, why would they arrest innocent people?”

“They are from Abuja, they asked us to bail ourselves or we will be taken to Abuja and our cars will be confiscated. I was trying to be stubborn when one of those car owners told me to cooperate or they will take me to Abuja and I will never see my car again”

“God will punish them” Kike said as tears rolled down her eyes.

“I even heard that those they take to Abuja never come back, they usually kill their victims. I had to give them two hundred and fifty thousand naira before they release me”

“This people have killed me o! We are in trouble Femi, how do we pay back all those debts we are owing?” Kike wailed.

“We only have one hundred thousand naira here, I thought it is better to come home alive in one piece than to prove stubborn and be killed” I said sadly.

“Those wicked SARS will never know peace, God will punish their generation. You have done the right thing dear; you are right, I prefer you coming back home alive” she said as she hugged me tightly.

I hugged her back in relief and vowed to take care of her no matter what “It is over now Kike, I will never allow anybody to come between us again”

“But what o! What are we going to tell your mom? We already promised to send fifty thousand to her today?”

“My mother will have to exercise patience till next month Kike, she will understand”

“No, we can’t do that to Mama. How do you expect her to stock up her shop if we did not send the money?”

“Where was she when we are suffering and trying to make ends meet? She didn’t lift a finger to help us when you were running around to feed us. We didn’t owe her any money” I said looking adamant.

“She would think I pushed you not to give her money, I know she did not like me. Let's give her fifty thousand, we will know how to manage” Kike said looking sad and I pitied her that moment.

“What will happen to our debt, it is over a hundred thousand naira already and we owe Landlord fifty thousand naira?”

“Don’t worry Femi, there is this small microfinance group loan they are taking in my place of work, I didn’t want to take it before but I don’t have any option now”

“Kike, God knows I have never seen a supportive wife like you before. You are an angel”

“I will do anything for you Femi, I know when the money comes we will enjoy it together”
