EPISODE 15
“Kike, God knows I have never seen a supportive wife like you before. You are an angel”
“I will do anything for you Femi, I know when the money comes we will enjoy it together”
We ended up giving my mother fifty thousand out of the money, and we used the remaining fifty thousand to buy petty things in the house. Kike gave me twenty thousand Naira for fuel and other expenses.
“What is it Kike? I can’t stand all these your moods anymore” I said looking concerned.
“Femi, debtors are just calling here and there, the insults are too much for me to bear,
” she said crying.
“What happened to the Micro Finance loan you want to collect?”
“They asked me to bring three guarantors; I am too ashamed to approach anybody to stand as guarantor for me. I bragged too much when you got that job, I didn’t know it will end like this”
“Don’t worry, I will stand as a guarantor for you, you can also approach my mother and sister”
“I have already done that Femi, I had to go to her shop when I came back from school yesterday to explain things to her”
“What did she say?”
“She said she is sure I mismanaged the money and lied that you got robbed. She said she is afraid the police we arrest her if we fail to pay the money, she didn’t even give me something to drink before sending me away” Kike said tearfully.
“You shouldn’t have given her that fifty thousand naira Kike; she did not deserve anything from us. I will talk to my friend Bayo and his wife, I am sure they will help out” I said as I hugged her reassuringly.
Kike quickly wiped her tears and tried to smile. I noticed she looked more tired and worn out, the hand she raised to her face is already withering. “She had spent all her life taking care of me, my family had abused her and made a jest of her because she couldn’t give me a child but she bore everything patiently. There is nothing I cannot do for my Kike”
Cynthia didn’t resume back to work until a week later, she was glowing and looking as stunning as ever. Nobody will ever guess her mother had died a week before, her new hairdo was the latest most expensive weave and everyone was admiring her.
I neither spoke to her nor respond to her greetings for a whole week, I even contemplated firing her. I was waiting for her to make any minor mistake; it would be my justification for sending her away from the company.
To my surprise, she became nicer to everyone and was doing her job well, for two weeks I couldn’t find any fault in her job enough to fire her. I later decided to ignore her instead since she didn’t even speak a single word to me after the incident.
My friend Bayo and his wife stood beside Kike and she was able to get a loan of two hundred naira to clear the debts we owed, I promised her we are going to pay the two hundred thousand naira immediately I got my salary that month.
A few days later, I received a call from the owner of the company. He said he received an anonymous report about our supervisor Mr. Chris, he was accused of adjusting the meter and selling fuel to customers at an exorbitant price.
“This can't be happening without me knowing about it Sir,” I said in surprise.
“Your competency is in question here Mr. Femi, how can you not know we are losing customers because the fuel of 5litres now looks like that of 2litres when people buy from our filling station”
“I can assure you that there is nothing like that Sir, our customers are all satisfied” I assured my boss.
“Fire him now or I fire you,” My boss said with his American accent before ending the call. I began to sweat profusely immediately. I called my secretary and ask her to prepare a sack letter immediately, before stepping down to see what was going at the pump stations downstairs.
Everything was going on fine and I saw Mr. Chris drinking a bottle of coke at a corner. I walked up to him to question him.
“Hello Mr. Chris”
“Good day Sir”
“Is everything good here?”
“Sure sir. Everything is going on fine as expected”
“Have we been having any complaint?”
“Not at all our customers are increasing every day,” he said cheerfully.
I didn’t know what to say as I walked away after giving him a brief nod. I knew he was falsely accused but it cannot change the fact that he is going to receive a sack letter the following day. “How will the poor man take care of his family? It is not even up to two months since he started work” I thought sadly as I walked back to my office.
A few minutes later someone burst into my office without knocking.
“Excuse me,” I said lifting my head and it turned out to be Cynthia.
“Well, we need to talk,” she said looking sassy.
