I HAVE DRUNK STRANGE WATERS - Episode 6

EPISODE 6

I opened the door reluctantly, and she got out holding her jacket. Cynthia’s total package will make any woman develop an inferiority complex; she was curvy and spotless.

My wife glared at her as she got out of the car, she glanced briefly at my wife and did not bother to greet her.

“Thanks for the ride Sir. Looking forward to seeing you at work tomorrow” she said sweetly and walked away.

To make matters worse, our amebo Neighbor was staring at her too from across the street.

“Baby it’s not what you are thinking” I said to Kike looking sorry. What happened next was totally unexpected and I couldn’t forget it for the rest of my life.

Our Amebo neighbor burst into laughter from across the road and Kike burst into tears simultaneously. It took few minutes for me to gather myself together.

I managed to drag Kike inside the car, lock the door, and headed home.

“Hu hu hu hu” I heard Kike’s sob from the back of the back and my heart broke into a thousand pieces. I imagined how the scene must have looked to her, our nosy neighbor made everything worse.

I didn’t say any word to her on our way home, luckily for me there was no one loitering inside our compound so it was easy to take her inside without anyone noticing.

“I am sorry, It’s not what you think Kike. I was just helping her”

“Helping her? Don’t tell me that Femi, I knew what I saw” she said amidst tears.

“What did you see? A colleague getting out of my car? Can’t you just trust me and stop imagining what is not true?”

“You have made me a laughing stock; all our neighbors will laugh at me. Look at the way that girl looked at me as if I was nobody and our neighbor saw it” Kike said wiping her tears.

“That is it! You always care about what people would say. I have always told you not to live your life to please anyone; they are entitled to their own opinion”

“What is a girl like that doing in your car in the first place Femi? This is your first day at work and you are already bringing girls home” she said with an accusing look on her face and I didn’t know when I lost my temper.

“What is the essence of this marriage if we can’t even trust each other? Why do you think I can do such a thing to you after all we have been through together? It is either you trust me in this house or you keep making yourself miserable” I said and I worked in angrily.

“Femi if you ever bring any girl to this house I will kill both of you” she threw at my back but I was done with the whole drama.

We didn’t say a word to each other for the rest of the day and I was too busy to even care. I strolled out around 8:00PM in the night when the tension became unbearable. I was coming back late in the night when I saw our neighbor Iya Chidi with her husband sitting on two chairs inside the compound, her words stopped me dead in my track.

“Darling, you can’t imagine what I saw today o! That our useless and jobless neighbor that his wife was going around telling people he got a job at an Oil Company came home with a car today”

“We should be happy for them dear, it is bad to call people names behind their back”

“Happy nkwa? He came home with one fresh Oyinbo fish, come and see drama at our bus stop today” she said laughing scornfully.

“Really? He must be an ingrate to do that to his wife after all the woman did for her” Baba Chidi replied.

“If you see how that maami water abused his wife today, she was about slapping her if not for my intervention” she said mockingly. I was surprised at her exaggerations and I was about to walk towards them when I saw my wife walked towards them.

“Iya Chidi that is enough! I was hearing you from our room. How can you open your mouth to say such rubbish about my husband?” Kike shouted.

“Don’t come here to shout at me o! Go and scold your philandering husband that has no shame” Iya Chidi shouted back.

“You are just jealous of him and jealousy will kill you! I trust my husband so stop saying rubbish and keep an eye on yours” she said and then turned to her husband “Baba Chidi I respect you a lot, I don’t know you will encourage your wife to gossip about other people’s family. If she ever spread lies about my husband in the neighborhood I will not hesitate to call her out, you better warn her” my wife said and walked in angrily.

At that moment I was proud of my wife and the way she defended me, it means my Kike has decided to trust me. I walked past Iya Chidi and her husband; both of them were already looking sober and ashamed.

My Kike jumped into my arms immediately I opened the door.

“Thanks for defending me” I said and hugged her tightly.

“Let’s leave this house Femi, I can’t stand them talking about you that way”

“No, I am going to work hard and build a house for you instead. Nobody will ever look down on my wife again”
