EPISODE 43

Cynthia walked out of my room without uttering another word and I locked the door, I sat on the bed and supported my head with my two hands. I knew canceling the whole wedding was out of it because I don’t want a few of our relatives and Mama’s friends that came to carry the news back to Lagos, I just have to find a way to save face tomorrow.

My phone rang and I picked it up to check the caller, when I discovered that it was Kike I waited for the phone to stop ringing and turned it off immediately. Kike is the last person I wanted to speak with at that moment, something tells me she has a hand in what is happening. 

I was tired of the whole drama that night, what kept me going was the fact that Cynthia is carrying my child and I have to do what was right by her. “I can't risk losing my child, I just have to endure her people’s stupidity for just another day”

Then I remembered the fact that Cynthia was carrying my child and I had slapped her out of anger. I knew I just had to apologize, I couldn’t risk putting my phone on because I wanted to avoid Kike’s call. “I have to take everything easy so that her witchcraft will not work on me”

Cynthia said she was in another nearby room, I just have to ask the receptionist or just walk around with the hope of bumping into her.

I was walking down the hall when I heard a familiar voice that made me stiffen in shock. I recognized that voice so well so I know I am not mistaken. He was standing with his back to me, he wore a white round neck on blue jeans and a glass of wine was in hand as he laughed heartily.

“I am sure it was one hell of a trip Susan, please ensure Mama has a good night's rest”

There is no way he’ll be here from Lagos so I know I had to know why. I didn’t take another step as I listen intently to his discussion on the phone. Hearing what the person on the other end was saying was impossible because of the distance but I knew I could put two and two together to get four.

“Yeah! I know I got to marry a fabulous woman but you don’t know half of the story. She is the reason for my everything and there is nothing I won't do for her. Today of all day…” 

He suddenly heard a footstep and stiffened “Let me call you back Suzie” he said and hung up. Then he turned around and I saw shock written all over his face.

“Mr. Femi?”

The footstep got closer and before I could say a word Cynthia appeared. She got to him first before seeing me.

“AJ! What are you doing here?” she said pouting.

He cleared his throat noisily, then she turned her head and sighted me. I was waiting to see the shock on her face but she smiled instead.

“Mr. Femi! What a pleasant surprise! How are you feeling now? Hope you liked your room?”

I quickly composed myself, I suddenly remembered that I am a married man and have to explain to this man why I happen to be in the same hotel with one of our staff in a faraway state.

“Yes.. the rooooom is nice..” I stammered.

“Great! I met AJ when I arrived this morning. You know I have to clear the way for you to meet our client so that the meeting will be successful”

“Which meeting?” I asked looking lost.

“The meeting we are holding tomorrow I have some of the files in a flash drive here,” She said and gave me a side look.

“OKaaay! The meeting’ I said hurriedly feeling like an imbecile.

"I'll see you some other time Mr. Femi. It's a nice hotel, have a great time" Mr. Yinka said and walked away hurriedly.

I turned towards Cynthia and something suddenly seem out of place.

 "Do you know Mr. Yinka from somewhere before?"

"Of course, I know him, we work in the same office," she said defensively.

"I know him too, he's our accountant and we all know him as Mr. Yinka. I noticed you addressed him as AJ" 

"AJ is just a nickname for crying out loud!" She snapped.

"A nickname only you know. His name is Mr. Yinka Abba's, nobody knows anything about him or his background. How come you are addressing him by a pet name? The way you called his name..."

"Don't tell me you are jealous? This is touching considering the fact that it is coming from a man who has a wife at home" Cynthia said scornfully.

"What is Mr. Yinka doing in Calabar today of all days and what relationship do you have with him?" I said harshly.

"You see Femi, I think I am fed up with all this charade! Since the first day I stepped into your life you have always been judging and accusing me. All I ever done is love you and I have been good to you. I took you into my arms when that witch you call your wife wanted to kill you. What do I get for all this? Nothing! You have never thanked me for once and be grateful I came into your life. If you don't love me..."

I saw the tears in her eyes and knew that I was not fair to her, she was right in a way; I was blinded by jealousy and allowed myself to judge her without listening to what she had to say. I embraced her and held her lovingly.

"Why are we angry and bitter towards each other babe? Today is supposed to be our wedding day" I whispered.

"It's the fault of that witch, I'm sure she's looking at us inside her fetish calabash now. She is probably chanting incantations and waving a broom" she whispered back.

"We serve a living God, she'll never succeed in harming us"

"I love you Femi, can you trust me please?"

"I love you too babe and I trust you," I said holding on to her.

"He told me he came for an international exam..."

"Babe, it's OK. You don't have to explain anything" 

"How can you even think I can be having an affair when I'm pregnant and about to get married..."

"You are already married, your village people already went away with my traditional gifts. Besides, you look drop-dead gorgeous, you don't look pregnant"

Something suddenly occurred to me, Cynthia is almost 4 months gone and does not look pregnant. 

"Babe?"

"Yes"

"Why is it that you don't look pregnant?"
